Today I would like to introduce you to Mermaid Marla. Marla has been a mermaid for many years and the most beautiful long mermaid hair ever. I’m a big fan of her and am happy for this loving interview with her.
1. Please introduce yourself, including where you’re from and where you’re based.
My name is Mermaid Marla (aka Marla Lawrenz) and I spent the first 16 years of my life along the California coast in the Pismo Beach area. I recently moved to Maryland four years ago, coming from living in Florida for around 20 years.
2. How did you become a mermaid?
It actually came about from my love of scuba diving. I was researching monofins for exercise to strengthen my core. I was also interested in learning a little bit about free-diving. Some of my google searches started bringing up mermaid tails because they are made with monofins, which blew my mind! I couldn’t believe that I had never seen or heard of these things before. Well, after that first stumble I was hooked… I started researching feverishly on anything having to do with mermaid tails.
3. What means mermaiding to you?
The act of mermaiding to me is of course swimming with a mermaid tail. However, the meaning of mermaiding to me is something sort of spiritual. Like you become one with the ocean and your surroundings, and forget all your worries of your land life. I have always felt awkward being tall and skinny, and am not the most graceful at times. But as soon as I put on a tail I feel completely transformed. Even if I am not the greatest mermaid swimmer, it makes me feel beautiful, graceful and calm.
4. Do you have a mermaid bucket list?
Oh of course! But there are too many to list all of them – lol! I think my biggest items right now would be: Swim with wild dolphins/manta rays/whales/sharks (well you get the picture), take an official freediving course, swim in the Jellyfish Lake in Palau, and swim in as many different countries as possible…
6. Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would like to say how thankful I am for my wonderful husband and my true friends who accept me no matter what I do or get myself into! For me, mermaiding is just a natural extension of my connection to and love of the ocean. I also would like to thank you for asking me to be a part of your blog! It’s always fun to share the love of mermaiding with others who are wondering what it’s all about or just with fellow merfolk. You have been such an inspiration to me and I always look forward to seeing your beautiful work!
Thank you very much Mermaid Marla for answering my questions and the compliments. Hearing that from such a great mermaid as yourself really means a lot to me. Keep up the good work and hopefully one day we’ll manage to swim together somewhere in this big ocean 🙂
